The Importance of Kindergartens for Resilience and Life Skills (in Ukrainian)

Translated to Ukrainian by Natalia Ilischuk for the Schools for Democracy programme, this publication helps pre-school teachers integrate resilience and life skills into everyday kindergarten life.

Barnehagens betydning for livsmestring (The Importance of Kindergartens for Resilience and Life Skills), written by assistant professors Elisabeth Walsøe Lehn and Anne Holla Sivertsen at Queen Maud University College in Norway, takes the abstract terms of “resilience” and “life skills” and applies it to everyday life in a kindergarten.

The publication explores the role of daily routines, nutrition, kindergarten design, mental health, and physical and sensory activities in supporting children’s development and wellbeing.

I was particularly struck by the easy-to-understand language, accessible texts and incredible illustrations – it makes you want to pick up this book, turn the pages, and read it again and again. After all, with every reading, it feels as though you are discovering something meaningful and important for yourself.

The Ukrainian version of the publication is used in Ukrainian kindergartens through our long-running programme Schools for Democracy: Strengthening Democratic Resilience through Education.

It works well as a reference book and is suitable for pre-school educators and others interested in childhood development.

The guidebook was translated into Ukrainian within the framework of the program “Democratic School: Education for Democratic Sustainability”, which is implemented by the European Wergeland Center (Oslo, Norway) and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine in partnership with the Center for Educational Initiatives, the All-Ukrainian Step by Step Foundation, and the savED Foundation with financial support from Norway.
