Tool for Democratic School Development

Tool for Democratic School Development fascilitates democratic transformations in school.

Within the frame of the “Schools for Democracy” programme in Ukraine, Tool for Democratic School Development was published by The European Wergeland Centre in 2017.

This publication outlines the changes which a school may wish to make in order to
learn and promote the culture of democracy. The tool can be used to analyse a school situation in order to identify aspects which require change.

It is based on the belief that the culture of democracy can be best learned through a comprehensive democratic school development, through a whole school approach
involving all stakeholders in the three main areas of school life: teaching and learning, school environment and governance, links and partnerships with the local community.

The publication lays out five principles for a democratic school and seven steps for democratic school development, as well as a tool for school self-assessment and templates for action plans and reporting of good practices.
