Signposts: Policy and Practice for Teaching about Religions and Non-Religious Worldviews in Intercultural Education

How can the study of religions and non-religious world views contribute to intercultural education in schools in Europe?

In 2014, The European Wergeland Centre and the Council of Europe (CoE) published Signposts – Policy and Practice for Teaching about Religions and Non-Religious Worldviews in Intercultural Education, a publication which gives practical advice to policy makers, education professionals in schools, and teacher trainers on how the study of religions and non-religious convictions can contribute to intercultural education in schools in Europe.

Structured around responses to a questionnaire sent to the ministries of education in the 47 member states, Signposts is a result of the work of a joint CoE-Wergeland expert group set up to help member states implement the Council of Europe Recommendation CM/Rec(2008)12 on the dimension of religions and non-religious convictions within intercultural education.

It is written on the group’s behalf by Professor Robert Jackson.

So far, Signposts has been translated into 13 languages, and has been used as a source for curriculum reform in Albania and Greece.
